UFC 156 Update: Fitch vs. Maia to Meet Super Bowl Weekend

A fantastic welterweight matchup between Demian Maia and Jon Fitch has been added to UFC 156. The bout will take place on the pay-per-view main card. Both fighters were victorious at last month’s UFC 153.UFC officials announced the pairing late Thursday evening.

Fitch earned “Fight of the Night” by defeating Erick Silva in an entertaining scrap that saw the former Boilermaker earn the unanimous decision victory. The win was Fitch’s first since 2010 due to a combination of injuries.

Maia absolutely destroyed Rick Story with a neck crank that created so much pressure it caused Story’s nose to start bleeding. The win ran the Brazilian’s record at welterweight to 2-0  after a 9-4 UFC run at middleweight.

UFC 156 will take place February 2 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The card will be headlined by a UFC featherweight championship tilt between the champ, Jose Aldo, and former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. The card is expected to also feature a light heavyweight bout between former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida and former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson, but there is some speculation that bout could end up on the recently announced Anaheim card.

Current UFC 156 Fight Card:

  • UFC Featherweight Championship Fight: Jose Aldo (c) vs. Frankie Edgar
  • Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio Silva
  • Dan Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida*
  • Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia
  • Rashad Evans vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira*
