Bellator 84 – Volkov Takes Title In A Snoozer, Herrig Impresses

Bellator 84

Those who didn’t watch the main event of tonight’s Bellator 84 should consider themselves lucky. The night saw a new heavyweight champion crowned to a chorus of boos from the Horseshoe in Hammond, Indiana as the onus was put on Rich Hale and Alexander Volkov to make up for the loss of a promising lightweight tournament final that would have seen Marcin Held meet Dave Jansen.

Over the duration of 25 minutes, Volkov did just enough to win a tepid decision, while Hale had little to offer him in return. Pawing jabs and circling galore was the recipe for pseudo-success on the Russian’s part. While the bout had its occasional moment, they came few and far between as “Drago” would have his hand raised, doing himself and the heavyweight division absolutely no favors in the winner’s circle.

When Felice Herrig and Patricia Vidonic met in the XFC cage earlier this year, It was an exciting back-and-forth affair. Eight months later, things couldn’t be more different. “Lil Bulldog” came out as a completely different fighter. The Team Curran product showed a much improved sense of positional grappling and takedown ability. After 15 minutes, The Illinois native would have her hand raised, taking a unanimous 30-27 from the judges’ table.
