While the UFC model is at a point where fans can take word of someone receiving a title shot at face value, company president Dana White has stated that Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez will likely lock horns with UFC champion Benson Henderson in his octagon debut.
Henderson recently took a dominant win over Melendez’s friend and teammate Nate Diaz at UFC on Fox 5. Gilbert has since been angling for a meeting with Bendo, and he may get it as White said that “It will probably come right away.”
With Strikeforce closing its doors, “El Niño” will be official UFC property some time after the San Jose-based promotion’s final event on January 12, where he was expected to compete but due to injury was unable to.
While the UFC champion certainly has no shortage of contenders, especially given the coming fight between two of his career rivals in Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis, it would seem ideal to have the promotion’s first real title unification bout include Melendez, who has been considered a top lightweight for what seems like an eternity at this point.
