News that the upstart MMA promotion, World Series of Fighting, will implementing a fight night bonus system, similar to that of the UFC, going into 2013 was revealed by company president Ray Sefo today. Fret not, for the promotion has gone back and given a little something to the fighters that participated in the promotion’s November 3, 2012 debut.
Anthony Johnson received a “Knockout of The Night” bonus for leaving D.J. Linderman facedown on the mat in a heap at 3:58 of the opening round. “Submission of The Night” honors went to “Jz Calvan”, who notched his belt with a beautiful heel hook submission over T.J. O’Brien in just 63 seconds.
Where the promotion differs from the Zuffa model is the fact they hand out a “Performance of The Night” bonus in lieu of a “Fight of The Night”. Performance of the night winners were Marlon Moraes, who notched a lopsided upset victory over form WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres, and debuting kickboxing legend Tyrone Spong, who scored a walk-off knockout in his MMA debut against Travis Bartlett at 4:52 of the first period.
The actual numbers have yet to be reported.
WSOF is slated to have a second event in the first quarter of 2013. WSOF 2 is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
