Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine Play-By-Play

Strikeforce Welterweight Title Fight: Nate Marquardt (c) vs. Tarec Saffiedine

Rd. 1- Final Strikeforce bout ever is underway now. Legkick by Tarec. Another one by the Belgian. Marquardt with one of his on. Step side kick by Marquardt misses. Tarec catches Nate coming in and he’s stunned but no one notices in the arena but Militech and Kruk. Nate with a takedown attempt to try and recover, he doesn’t land it but he does recover. Leg kick to a side kick by Nate. Tarec with a clinch against the cage but Nate with a head-arm clinch. Saffiedine with a nice counter and ducks to double unders.Nate regains over-under clinch. Fighters break with :10 left. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Saffiedine.

Rd. 2- Fighters feeling each other out earlier. Tarec looks good. Leg kick by Nate. Takedown attempt by Nate but a body kick and a nice sprawl by Tarec. Nice single-leg finish by Nate but Tarec scrambles up. Knees by both men in the clinch. Both men with small strikes and Nate tries a double but is rebuffed again. “Big John” separates them now. Jab by Tarec. Legkick by Tarec. Legkicks by both fighters. Nate telegraphs a knee tap and Saffiedine defends nicely.High kick to a comb by Nate is mostly blocked. Tarec with a nice combo and then takes away Marquardts legs right befor the horn. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Saffiedine (20-18).

Rd. 3- Tarec looks confident early now. Nice leck kick by Tarec. Nate is more aggressive here. Clinch by Nate and a nice knee. Nate with a body lock.  Nate ducks under but Tarec spins out. Flying knee by Marquardt misses. Everything he’s trying Tarec is well prepared for. Clinch and nice punch by Nate rocks Tarec on the exit. Legkick by Nate. Tarec clinches brefly. Jabs by Nate. Legkick by Tarec. More jabs by Nate and bigger leg kick by Tarec. Another big legkick by Tarec. Nate’s thigh looks pulverized. Nate with a takedown attempt late and Tarec defends with a front-head lock ad a knee as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Saffiedine (30-27)

Rd. 4- Saffidine is targeting the leg again. Marquardt moves forward and barely misses an uppercut. Wicked legkick again by Tarec. Spinning back elbow attempt by Tarec. More inside and outside legkicks by Tarec as Marquardt’s leg is starting to give way. Sense of urgency for Nate as he attacks wildly. Another massive leg kick buckles Nate. Nate is limpin in the cage. Inside leg kick by Tarec on the same leg. nate catches a leg but h can’t get it down. Nate is finally able to check one. Nice body shot to a knee by Tarec. Huge legkick by Tarec again. Big strike by Tarec and he controls the clinch. Collar clinch and they trade body punches. Big body shot by Nate. Huge leg kicks by tarec and Nate’s leg is figuratively hanging by a thread now. MMAFrenzy scores it 10-9 Saffiedine (40-36).

Rd. 5- Nate answers the bell and is desperately trying to go. Saffiedine is now in total control and attacks both low and high on the champ. Tarec clinches. Saffiedine stalking him down. Nate finally blocks a kick. Nate’s thigh is a disaster, not sure how he’s standing. Tarec clinches and Nate takes control briefly. Uppercut by Tarec misses. Clinch by Nate against the cage but Tarec spins out. Tarec stalks forward and lands a big take down of his own. Ground and pound by Saffidine. What a performance as the round ends as he should have a shut out 50-45.

Daniel Cormier vs. Dion Staring

Rd. 1- Staring looking for big shots early and Cormier with a nice kick. Cormier clinches briefly. Cormier clinches again and DC with a lateral drop to side control. DC with some elbows as he looks for the crucifix  He has it briefly but Staring works out and escapes to his feet. Wicked elbow from DC rocks Staring and he is swarming with big shots. DC with another takedown and gets side control position again. Elbows by DC. DC lets him up and throws a headkick and Staring loses his mouthpiece. Big John stops it briefly to replace it and Cormier pressures again. DC with the body lock and crunches him the mat in mount. Big shots by Cormier as Staring fights. DC is in total control. More strikes from DC in mount as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-8 Cormier.

Rd. 2- Staring storms out and clinches with DC. DC asserts control in the clinch before letting him go. Jab by Cormier. Staring with  body shot. Staring clinches and DC easily inside trips him to the mat. DC advances to side control but Staring gives up his back. Staring attempts an ugly-Granby roll type move into half guard. DC works back to mount and is pounding away with some strikes close to illegal. DC flattens him out and pounds away. Staring gives up his back and Cormier puts a hook in. Cormier is just teeing off as Staring is just trying to survive. After a barrage of shots “Big John” steps in.

Josh Barnett vs. Nandor Guelmino

Rd. 1- Barnett wastes no time and lands a body lock takedown. Nandor has a useless guillotine. Barnett postures up and then drops for a leglock and misses it and they stand. Nandor tries a whipback but misses it. Barnett with the body lock takedown into mount, he fakes a modified Ezekiel choke and passes easily to an arm-triangle after Nandor panics for the quick tap.

Mike Kyle vs. Gegard Mousasi

Rd. 1- Mousasi opens it up with a brutal legkick. Kyle swings wildly and misses on two combos. Combo by Mousasi as Kyle moves forward and Kyle with a few nice knees. Mousasi tries a single but it’s not there. Solid kick by Kyle. Kyle throwing and but Mousasi’s head movement is gorgeous and he avoids the strikes. Mousasi with a slick takedown and looks to posture up halfway through the round. Elbows by Mousasi. Kyle gives up half guard and Mousasi keeps looking to advance. Lockdown by Kyle. Elbows by Mousasi and then he beautifully passes to mount and postures up. Massive shots by Mousasi with a minute left. Kyle gives up his back and Mousasi locks in the choke. Kyle tries to tap but can’t and the referee does not move in. Mousasi keeps the hold until Kyle finally taps the arm of Mousasi and the referee finally moves in horribly late stoppage.

Ed Herman vs. Ronaldo Souza

Rd. 1- Both fighters are feeling each other out early before Jacare grabs the clinch against the cage. Fighters separate and Jacare with a gorgeous takedown attempt. Jacare postures up and Herman with a heel hook attack and the ref stands them up for an illegal upkick by Herman but the referee inexplicably restarts them on their feet. Big exchange by both fighters. Big front kick to the face followed by a big right by Jacare and the Brazilian with a devastating slam into side control. Kimura by Jacare and it is all over as Herman is forced to tap. Impressive submission.
