The Ultimate Fighter 17 – Episode 3 Recap

TUF1703_EMAILThe Ultimate Fighter 17 returned to action tonight on FX. This week featured the second bout in The Ultimate Fighter house as Team Sonnen’s Uriah Hall took on Team Jones’s Adam Cella. Be sure to stay tuned to MMAFrenzy as we track fourteen middleweights, coached by UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen, vying to become The Ultimate Fighter. [Spoilers Below]

Show begins with Kevin Casey and Bubba McDaniel talking trash back and forth after McDaniel called out Casey in the previous episode. Casey says he is cool with the matchup but that the bout was a bad matchup for him in the first round with a cut over his eye suffered in the preliminary round..

Cut to Uriah Hall, and Hall recounts growing up from coming up from Jamaica and dealing with bullies after coming to the United States. Back at the training center, Sonnen talks about how Hall is the best athlete in the house but that he is his own worst enemy. The fighter gets extremely frustrated after Kevin Casey forced him to tap due to an armbar while rolling. Hall seems to take it personally and Casey gives him space to cool down.

Back at the house, Cella is talking about how he has something to fall back on if he loses but that he truly wants to win this. Back at the gym, Jones is working with his team on throwing solid elbows. Jones talks about how the team feels a little intimidated by Urijah and how he is trying to humanize him.

With Team Sonnen, Sonnen is focusing solely on offense rather than defense. Chael says that he believes in attacking to open up holes in his opponents game. Urijah is then shown talking to Sonnen about doubt creeping into his game. Sonnen reveals that he saw a sports psychologist about it and details how he overcame it himself.

On the Team Sonnen van, Casey is taking some crap from the team about not facing Bubba in this week’s fight. Teammate Jimmy Quinlan is pretty blunt of about Casey being hesitant. Back in the Team Jones locker room, Cella is ticked off by everyone looking past him.

Both fighters make weight easily, and UFC president Dana White gushes over Hall.

After weigh-ins, Jones, and his dog, drops in on his team with some steaks and fish to grill and get to know his team. Sitting around the fire, Jones talks with his team about what it means to be a fighter. Cella, McDaniel, and Dylan Andrews reveal their motivations for fighting in a bit of an emotional moment. Jones tells the team they are a family as the show cuts to commercial.
