The Bellator Season Eight Light Heavyweight tournament rolled into the Maverick Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, and saw the biggest upset of the year hitherto take place as the odds-on favorite to win the tournament, “King Mo” Lawal fell to Emanuel Newton. Newton advances to the finals with Mikhail Zayats punching his ticket as well.
Muhammed Lawal started off well against Emanuel Newton, with his recent Jeff Mayweather training apparent from the start. Mo was able land to and showed improved head movement, but one hole in his game was all “The Hardcore Kid” needed. The former Strikeforce Champion continued to drop his left hand after exchanges, and after dodging a combination from the Kings MMA fighter, the former national team member again dropped his left hand, only to to be met with a spinning back-fist to the jaw. The King was out on his feet, slowly falling to the mat, and the referee had no choice to but to call the action at 2:35.
Mikhail Zayats absolutely ran through Jacob Noe when the two light heavyweights stepped into the cage. The Russian fighter was in no mood to waste time. An early low kick from “The Psycho” was countered by a straight right that put him on the mat and busted his mouth open. Zayats got on top and moved immediately to mount where he would continue to work. Noe could do nothing but pray for the referee to stand the fighters, unfortunately he didn’t get the chance to begin his prayer. The RusFighter product locked in an armbar and forced his opponent to tap at 3:38 of the first stanza.
