UFC president Dana White has confirmed reports that the promotion is gunning for UFC middleweight championship Anderson Silva to defend his title against Chris Weidman on Independence Day weekend. Tatame first reported the rumors earlier this week with White confirming the possibility yesterday in Anaheim.
The unscheduled card would likely take place July 6 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“That’s what we want, but no, we don’t have it yet,” White said today of the fight. “We’ve been talking (with Anderson). It’s not done, but we’ll get it done.”
Weidman has lobbied for the bout since defeating Mark Munoz last July. Michael Bisping’s recent loss to Vitor Belfort opened the door for the bout to happen.
Weidman is 9-0 in his career and holds wins over Demian Maia and Mark Munoz. Silva has won all fifteen of his UFC bouts, last defeating Stephan Bonnar at UFC 153.
