After a rollicking, historic night of fights at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, it is surprisingly the undercard that is getting the bonus money at UFC 157. Taking home an extra $50k for their efforts are Robbie Lawler, Kenny Robertson, Dennis Bermudez, and Matt Grice.
Lawler scored a major upset in his return to the octagon after eight long years, knocking out perennial top welterweight Josh Koscheck at 3:57 of the opening round. The HIT Squad fighter was awarded the “Knockout of The Night” bonus as the sole fight eligible to receive the honor.
Kenny Robertson’s modified leg lock victory over Brock Jardine was unorthodox and interesting enough to take home “Submission of the Night”. With his opponent’s back, the fighter from Illinois grabbed the leg of Jardine and stretched it toward him while creating leverage by using his legs, forcing the tap at 2:57.
In what may very well be the top candidate for “Fight of The Year”, Dennis Bermudez and Matt Grice went to war. Over fifteen minutes, both men would find themselves in dire straights, only to survive and continue the fight. Although Bermudez had his hand raised in a split decision, UFC President Dana White was quick to point out that there was no loser in the bout. Both men left the arena $50,000 with the “Fight of The Night” bonus.
