With UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz still on the mend from knee surgery, interim champ Renan Baráo will remain active against Eddie Wineland. Baráo vs. Wineland will be the headlining bout for the UFC’s first trip to Winnipeg this June.
ESPN confirmed the bout with UFC president Dana White earlier today.
Baráo was hoping to unify the bantamweight crown in his next fight but that will have to wait for that now with Cruz still on the shelf. Baráo was recently in action at UFC on FUEL TV 7, where he defeated Michael McDonald in London, England. The Brazilian has not tasted defeat since his MMA debut and rides a 31-fight unbeaten streak into Winnipeg.
Eddie Wineland comes into this bout riding a two-fight win-streak. The former WEC bantamweight champion was last in action at UFC 155, where he defeated Brad Pickett via split decision in an exciting bout.
UFC 161 takes place June 15 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The fight card will be headlined by the interim bantamweight title fight between Baráo and Wineland. The card will be co-headlined by a pair of light heavyweight battles pitting Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua 2.
