June is packed for the UFC with 3 events while July is “Stacked” with the biggest UFC event of the summer, UFC 73. Bookmaker.com has released their early odds for the main events of UFC 72, The Ultimate Fight 5 Finale, and UFC 73.
As expected Rich Franklin is a -210 favorite over Yushin Okami at +170. The former champ Franklin successfully defended his title twice before he dropped the title in October to Anderson Silva. He rebounded with a win over Jason MacDonald at UFC 68 and will likely receive a title shot with a win over fellow contender Okami. Yushin has won 6 straight MMA fights including 4 in the UFC. His most recent win was over Mike Swick at UFC 69. With these odds and Okami’s status as a contender I like Okami as the underdog bet in this fight.
Next on the UFC betting schedule is The Ultimate Fighter 5 finale bout between BJ Penn and Jens Pulver. Despite back-to-back losses by Penn against Georges St. Pierre and Matt Hughes Penn is a huge favorite at -515. Pulver also lost his last UFC fight to TUF 5 competitor Joe Lauzon and is currently a +365 underdog. Right now I like Penn in this bout but if Pulver goes above +400 I would put your money on him.
Finally are the odds for the 3 big fights of UFC 73 on July 7th. The contenders match between Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans has Tito a -130 favorite over Evans who currently sits at even. Rashad is another good underdog pick in this bout.
In the lightweight title fight between Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca has the champion as a -240 favorite over Franca at +190. Although Franca has earned the title shot I think Sherk will keep his title in this one. Anderson Silva is a -205 favorite over +165 challenger Nate Marquardt. I like Marquardt but unless his odds rise significantly my money is on Silva to retain his title.
