The Ultimate Fighter 5 has failed to live up to its hype so far, although ratings have been improving of late likely as a result of the recent main stream media coverage of the sport and the organization.
Episode 8 of the season which featured the technical street fight between Noah Thomas and Marlon Sims as well as a fight between Joe Lauzon and Cole Miller, did a 1.3 rating. It was up .2 over episode 7.
Episode 9 featuring Brandon Melendez against Gray Maynard did a slightly lower 1.2 rating.
This season is averaging a 1.2 rating 9 episodes into the season. The show peaked during season 3 with a 1.7 average rating although all of the other prior seasons have drawn higher than a 1.2 rating with season 4 “The Comeback” the lowest rated season at 1.3.
When The Ultimate Fighter 6 debuts this fall don’t be surprised if we see a bigger change in the format of the show. The UFC brass is surely disappointed with the ratings thus far although next seasons saving grace could easily be its welterweight title fight between Matt Serra and Matt Hughes on the seasons finale in December.
