According to UFC Junkie after a long delay Evan Tanner will return to the octagon at UFC 76 this September in Anaheim. Tanner, a former UFC Middleweight Champion, defeated Justin Levens in his last UFC fight early last year at UFC 59.
We have been closely following Tanner for several months from his attempt to form an MMA-based foundation to his announced UFC return. Earlier this month we learned he would be returning in September at UFC 75 or UFC 76 although it appears the latter will likely be the event where Tanner makes his long awaited return to the UFC.
No opponent has been mentioned for his return.
The tumultuous middleweight division has seen a revolving door of champions since last year. Tanner won the belt by defeating David Terrell at UFC 51 but quickly dropped it to Rich Franklin at UFC 53. Franklin defended the title twice before being defeated by Anderson Silva in October at UFC 64 when he was defeated in his third attempted title defense.
Earlier this year Silva was to put his title on the line at UFC 67 but after Travis Lutter was unable to make weight the fight was made non-title. In several weeks Silva will put his title on the line for the first time (hopefully) against Nate Marquardt at UFC 73 “Stacked”.
Due to the series of short-reign champions Tanner is expected to jump right back into the title picture when he returns in September.
