UFC Roundup: Post-UFC 72 Edition

With UFC 72 firmly behind us (and my personal return from vacation) it is time to cover a backlog of UFC news and happenings:

  • The UFC 75 main event between Quinton Jackson and Dan Henderson will in fact be for both titles. Dana White has stated he doesn’t like champions holding simultaneous title which is likely to mean the UFC is pulling for Jackson to win an unify the belts. Also, the weight limit will be the normal light heavyweight 206 pounds.
  • If Phil Baroni defeats Frank Shamrock he may come to the UFC.
  • The Canadian Press has announced that the UFC will be coming to Montreal this October. This is the same month that a tentative UFC 77 event from Cincinnati had been scheduled for. Top Canadian fighter and former champion Georges St. Pierre will likely not be fighting because it will be just 2 months after his fight with Josh Koscheck at UFC 74. There are two likely possibilities: The Montreal event is pushed to November ’07-January ’08 OR the Cincinnati event will be pushed back. While I am hoping that they push the Montreal event back so GSP can participate I would expect it to be the Cincinnati event because it has yet to be publicly announced.
  • Speaking of Cincinnati, it has been confirmed that Rich Franklin will face the winner of UFC 73’s matchup between Anderson Silva and Nate Marquardt. This will likely be the headlining fight at the UFC event in Cincinnati.
  • Talks with Kurt Angle appear to still be on about the Olympic champion and professional wrestler coming to the UFC.
  • A rematch between Forrest Griffin and Tito Ortiz is being tossed around even though Tito has “turned down” the fight (more on this fight here)
  • UFC 72 drew approximately 8,000 fans in Belfast. This number is below the approximately 10,000 person capacity of the arena and includes free tickets the UFC handed out to fans to fill the stands. The live gate for the event was $1.4 million.
  • The UFC will be returning to Belfast in 2008 for another event and based on the ticket sales it will likely be a UFC Fight Night event.
  • Didn’t watch UFC 72 yet. You can find the fights on YouTube still by clicking here.
  • The official UFC 73 site has launched at
  • For the first time the UFC has confirmed UFC 74. The event is titled “Respect” and is headlined by Randy Couture defending his title against Gabriel Gonzaga. More on UFC 74 here.
  • UFC 75 was also confirmed on the PPV broadcast. This event is titled “Live from London” furthering suspicions that it will be a live PPV similar to UFC 72. Confirmed for the event is a Quinton Jackson vs. Dan Henderson main event as well as Mirko “Cro Cop” and Michael Bisping. More on UFC 75 here.
  • UFC Fight Night 10 did a 1.2 rating. This is the same rating as Fight Night 9: Stevenson vs. Guillard but lower than UFC Fight Night 8 in January.
