Yesterday UFC President Dana White confirmed our previous rumors announcing that Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic will face Cheick Kongo in a heavyweight matchup at UFC 75 in London on September 8th.
Prior to UFC 70, which was also in England, Filipovic had been on a tear winning 13 fights while dropping just 2. His then 5 fight win streak came to a shocking end when a high kick from submission artist Gabriel Gonzaga dropped him to the mat and sending Gonzaga to a UFC 74 title fight with UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture.
Kongo has defeated 3 of his 4 octagon opponents. He posted wins over Gilbert Aldana and Christian Wellisch before losing toat UFC 64 last October. His last fight was a rather uneventful majority decision at UFC 70 over Assuerio Silva.
The UFC has seized the opportunity to highlight top-European talent during events on the continent. This match pits “Cro Cop” from Croatia, against Kongo who is from France. As more names are announced for the event expect more European fighters to appear on the card.
