Florida fight fans rejoice! In a recent interview with The Gainesville Sun UFC President Dana White says the UFC plans on hosting events throughout the state with events possible Tampa, Miami, and Gainesville. White continued that the events may be UFC Fight Night events or PPVs.
Here are some excerpts from the article:
White specifically mentioned Miami and Tampa as potential locations, but when asked about Gainesville — with UF’s 12,000-seat O’Connell Center and national champions in football and basketball — he added “that would be awesome, too. I’d love to do that. That would be a great place.”
Although more news on a UFC event is likely sometime away it seems almost certain that the UFC sees Florida as one of the top markets for the sport and will continue to host shows there with some frequency.
In the last several years Florida (specifically Hollywood, Florida) has been the UFC’s most frequent venue outside of Las Vegas. Since October of 2006 the UFC has held 3 shows in Florida with all of the eminating from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood. Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock III and UFC Fight Night 8 were both held in the state as was UFC Fight Night 10 just several weeks ago.
While Florida is among many locations the UFC is planning on targeting do not be surprised if they ultimately host a large event sometime in the state next year. The company has shown its interest in producing MMA shows in the state and the shows are sure to get larger both in the caliber of fighters as well as the cities and venues they take place at.
More serious talks on specific venues will take place in early 2008.
