0-1 UFC fighter Jason Gilliam has stepped up to fill in for Drew Fickett on the July 7th UFC 73 according to published reports. His opponent will be Chris Lytle on the undercard of the event.
Fickett was forced to withdraw from the fight several days ago.
Gilliam was defeated in his UFC debut by Jamie Varner with a rear naked choke submission in the first round of their fight at UFC 68. Prior to the loss Gilliam had never lost a professional MMA fight. Win or lose, no fights that Gilliam has been involved in have ever gone to decision.
Lytle is just 2-4 in the UFC although he has faced some tough competition in the octagon. Among his most recent opponents are welterweight contender Karo Parisyan and current welterweight champion Matt Serra. Lytle was defeated on the finale of season 4 of The Ultimate Fighter by split decision and hasn’t rebounded from the loss yet. Lytle was defeated in his last UFC fight against former welterweight champion Matt Hughes at UFC 68 by unanimous decision.
With Gilliam liking to get his work done quick and Lytle also aiming for a quick win to get his UFC career back on track this fight is likely to have fireworks.
On a side note, the injury that forced Drew Fickett to withdraw from the fight was a significant knee injury with the extent of the damage and recovery still up in the air.
I will pass along more on the injury if and when I hear of it.
