Despite being a “Champion vs. Champion” match and many reports that the main event of UFC 75 between Quinton Jackson and Dan Henderson would unify the Pride and UFC championships, it now appears that the fight will likely NOT have any titles on the line.
The main event was expected to be a 5-round battle between Jackson and Henderson with the winner walking away with both titles likely to unify them into one championship but a recent quote suggests that will not be the case and the fight will likely be only 3 rounds. Here is what Dana White said on a recent pre-UFC 73 conference call with the media according to The Orange County Register:
“What we’re doing with that thing is we’re respecting both (the UFC and PRIDE) titles. The UFC title is the UFC champion and we’re respecting Dan as the PRIDE champion. Quinton will walk out with his belt if Dan wins and vice versa.”
Don’t take the news as official just yet as the status of the fight and whose championship, if any, would be on the line have gone back and forth several times already. If anything changes or the non-title status is officially confirmed I will be sure to pass along the news.
