Mike Swick may not be dropping welterweight just yet, at least not if current rumors are true. Swick is set to face face Chris Leben in a rematch this fall, likely at UFC 76 or perhaps a yet-to-be-announced UFC Fight Night 11 according to UFC Junkie.
Swick rose to UFC fame when he competed on season one of The Ultimate Fighter. He was eliminated from the show in the semi-finals by Stephan Bonnar but returned on the finale to defeat Alex Schoenauer. He went on to win 4 more UFC fights over Gideon Ray, Steve Vigneault, Joe Riggs, and David Loiseau. In his last fight Swick was defeated for just the second time in his career at the hands of Yushin Okami. His only other loss was to Leben.
Leben too appeared on The Ultimate Fighter’s first season as one of the more controversial figures in the history of the show. During his stint on the series Leben was defeated twice. In his first fight he lost to Josh Koscheck and, after being called in to replace Nate Quarry in the semi-finals, lost again to Kenny Florian. Despite the losses he returned on the finale of the show to defeat Jason Thacker. He too went on a winning streak defeating Patrick Cote, Edwin Dewees, Jorge Rivera, and Luigi Fioravanti before Anderson Silva defeated him at UFC Fight Night 5. Leben returned with a win over Jorge Santiago but consecutive losses to Jason MacDonald and Kalib Starnes in his two most recent fights have nearly pushed him out of the UFC.
In their first meeting at WEC 9 in 2004 Leben defeated Swick with a second round KO.
UFC 76 has long been rumored to be Mike Swick’s next fight but it was believed he would be dropping to welterweight for the bout. UFC Fight Night 11 on the other hand is only a hypothetical event which will likely take place in September although with the UFC already having 2 events in September and another in late August the event may not happen until later in the year. Swick recently said he would be returning to the UFC in September but whether it is UFC 76 or UFC Fight Night 11 is not yet known.
