Strikeforce today announced that Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Josh Thomson (16-2) will make his first title defense against Yves Edwards (34-14-1) at Strikeforce “Destruction” on Friday, November 21st at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
The co-main event matchup is a rematch of an August 2004 meeting at UFC 49 that saw Edwards knockout Thomson with a highlight reel head kick.
Thomson, a winner of eight-straight, claimed the 155-pound title with a unanimous decision win over then-champion Gilbert Melendez in June and recently scored a first-round TKO of Ashe Bowman in a non-title bout at the Playboy Mansion in September.
Edwards has won three of his last four bouts, losing his most recent fight to KJ Noons via first-round TKO in June.
In the “Destruction” main event Renato “Babalu” Sobral challenges light heavyweight champion Bobby Southworth for the 205-pound title. Also on the card, veteran Joe Riggs returns to the 170-pound welterweight division to battle Luke Stewart.
