Light heavyweight UFC veteran Carmelo Marrero (7-2) has been tapped to replace Alex Schoenauer against Steve Steinbeiss (4-1) at WEC 36 on Wednesday, November 5th, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
MMA Weekly is reporting that Schoenauer was forced out of the bout due to a torn hamstring.
After topping Cheick Kongo in his UFC debut Marrero dropped back-to-back bouts to Gabriel Gonzaga and Wilson Gouveia and left the promotion, but rebounded in his most recent bout last November with first-round TKO of Rafael Real.
A Bodog Fight veteran, Steinbeiss has won three-straight bouts, including his most recent victory over Francisco Alcantara in June.
The WEC’s light heavyweight and middleweight divisions will be abolished following the promotion’s December 3rd event and its contracted fighters will be shifted to the UFC, meaning the winner of the matchup is likely to move to the UFC, though the loser could also join the UFC’s 205-pound division.
