The UFC 74 fight card is unofficially complete as the UFC has announced that former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir will face Antoni Hardonk at UFC 74. The event features a heavyweight title fight between current champion Randy “The Natural” Couture and challenger Gabriel Gonzaga as well as a top contender bout between Josh Koscheck and Georges St. Pierre.
The 9-3 Mir has not fought in the UFC since November of last year when he was defeated by Brandon Vera. Mir won the UFC Heavyweight Title in 2004 but was stripped of the championship following his inability to return on time following a serious motorcycle accident. He has since returned to the UFC posting just a 1-2 record. Mir also lost a submission grappling event to fellow UFC fighter Renato “Babalu” Sobral earlier this year.
Hardonk, who has a 5-3 MMA record, is 1-1 in his first 2 UFC fights. He opened his UFC career with a win over Sherman Pendergarst at UFC 65 but was defeated by Justin McCully at UFC Fight Night 9 earlier this year.
The pair of fighters were originally set to fight at UFC Fight Night 9 but a shoulder injury to Mir kept him from competing in the fight and Hardonk instead faced McCully at the event. With his shoulder now apparently healed Mir will look to turn his career around after several lackluster performances and two losses following his motorcycle accident. The fight is not gauranteed to be televised on the PPV portion of the event.
