TUF 17 Finale Play-by-Play

TUF17FINALE_600X300_V2MMAFrenzy’s coverage of the UFC’s TUF 17 Finale continues with our play-by-play of tonight’s FX main card. Robert McDaniel vs. Gilbert Smith

Rd. 1- McDaniel works Smith to the fence and lands a nice combination on the break. Smith catches a kick by Bubba and scores the takedown before getting swept quickly. Hard GNP by McDaniel. Smith works up and reverses position with a takedown but is doing nothing with it yet. McDaniel works back to the cage as Smith hangs on. Elbows and punches from McDaniel. Bubba locks up a guillotine and cannot finish it but uses it to sweep nicely. Side control for Bubba. McDaniel looks so much better here than he did on the show. Big knees to the body from back-side control to end the round. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 McDaniel.

Rd. 2- Hard combos by McDaniel before Smith moves in on the takedown but gets stuffed. McDaniel controls the fight against the cage before Smith tries another takedown but McDaniel sprawls out and lands a nice knee on the exit. McDaniel has found his range now. Bad takedown attempt by Bubba and he’s caught in a guillotine but he defends well and escapes. Bubba has Smith’s back and works the hooks in. Smith works the hooks out early but then rolls to halfguard. Bubba is in complete control here. Smith finally escapes but looks exhausted. Nice combo by McDaniel as the round ends. Smith taunts for no reason but touches gloves after the bell. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 McDaniel (20-18)

Rd. 3- Touch of gloves to start the third. Smith with some better striking to start the third but gets pancaked on a takedown attempt. Bubba with some GNP but is frustrated as Smith tucks his head. McDaniel takes his back again. Smith sweeps out of mount but rolls into a triangle armbar. Smith is forced to tap.

Travis Browne vs. Gabriel Gonzaga

Rd. 1- Browne misses a headkick and Gonzaga pounces for the takedown attempt and the bout hits the cage. Vicious elbows to the side of the head from Browne and Gonzaga crumples.

Miesha Tate vs. Cat Zingano

Rd. 1- Fighters waste no time as Tate is looking for the takedown early. Punches by both fighters and a takedown by Cat. Big exchange (technical difficulties). Tate with some nice elbows as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Tate

Rd. 2- Zingano misses a flying knee and a whip back and Tate has a takedown. Tate with an armbar but Zingano works out. This is the best Tate we’ve seen in awhile but she gets swept. Tate tries a heel hook but Zingano is patient and starts elbowing the legs of Tate. Zingano steps over and now has Tate in a deep half. Big rights from Cat here. Tate finally works up after eating a ton of damage and misses a takedown. Big shots by Zingano as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Zingano (19-19).

Rd. 3 – Wicked left from Zingano stops a Tate kick. Blast double by Zingano and she works some elbows as Tate tries to land an arm bar. Partial mount by Zingano and she lands more strikes. Tate works out and ends up in a front headlock. Nice snatches of the FHL by Zingano and Tate rolls to side control to make it stop. Big shots by Zingano from the top. Huge lefts by Zingano. Tate works up but gets dropped by a knee. Tate back up and she eats some brutal knees and referee Kim Winslow mercifully steps in. Tate is a bloody mess.

TUF 17 Final: Kelvin Gastelum vs. Uriah Hall

Rd. 1- Touch of gloves and we’re off. Gastelum is stalking Hall early with Uriah in reverse to set up his counters. Hall does his best Ali/Silva impression as he backs up to the cage to strike. Gastelum uses the opportunity to look for a takedown and is rebuffed. Good clinch work by Kelvin but the fighter’s break. Leg kicks by Hall. Gastelum with a big legkick. Kelvin tags Hall and Hall is dazed. Gastelum continues to attack and lands a big takedown on Hall. Uriah works back to guard and the fighters exchange punches. Hall escapes and lands a nice straight right. Hall with a wild takedown attempt and Gastelum quickly bounces up as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Gastelum.

Rd. 2- Hall is much more focused to start round 2. Hall trying to emulate Silva again but gets taken down. GNP by Kelvin. Hall with a reversal against the fence. Big knee and left by Hall on the exit. Kelvin defends and nearly lands another takedown. Hall with an ugly trip of his own. Not a lot of work by Hall on top. Kelvin works up and gets suplexed (not very well mind you) but immediately scrambles back up. Nice shot by Kelvin as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Hall (19-19).

Rd. 3- Knee to the groin by Hall to start the round and there’s a brief break. Hall back at it. Legkick by Hall. Another big takedown by Hall. Hall bounces back with a huge reversal and lands some nice shots before Hall escapes. Huge strike by Gastelum lands and he clinches Hall against the cage. Fighters break and we’re centered. Headkick by Hall is blocked. Right by Kelvin glances off Hall. Legkick by Kelvin. Huge double leg with 1:15 left. Hall tries a bad kimura and almost gets caught in an armbar. Kelvin looks to posture up. Both fighters trading power shots on the ground with :10 left. Near armbar by Kelvin as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Gastelum.

Urijah Faber vs. Scott Jorgensen

Rd. 1- Faber rocks Jorgensen off the bat and Scott tries a takedown but Faber stuffs it. Clinch work now. Gorgeous inside trip by Jorgensen in the clinch. Faber back up. Faber ends up on Jorgensen’s back briefly after a scramble but SJ escapes. Brilliant combo by Faber and he follows it with  beautiful knee to the body that stumbles Jorgensen. Faber takes Jorgensen’s back in the scramble and starts landing hard strikes. Front headlock position and Faber tries for the guillotine twice but cannot get it. Jorgensen is in a deep half guard now. Faber again takes his back. Faber tries to lock up the RNC as the round ends but doesn’t have time to finish. MMAFrenzy has a dominant 10-9 Round for Faber.

Rd. 2- Jorgensen storms forward and takes an accidental shot to the cup in the process. Small skirmishes after the restart. Big combo by Faber. Nice left by Jorgensen. Huge body shot as Jorgensen goes for a takedown but Faber’s whizzer puts an end to that. Faber is just half a step faster so far. Jorgensen is landing shots, but Faber’s movement is keeping anything from landing flush. Gorgeous counter takedown by Faber. Jorgensen uses a kimura to sweep up to his feet and lands a nice left on the exit. Nice left by Jorgensen as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has a closer round going 10-9 Faber (20-18).

Rd. 3- Small skirmishes for the first minute of the round. Wicked combo by Faber lands hard. Solid combo by Jorgensen but Faber keeps landing too. Clinch by Jorgensen and Faber with small strikes as Jorgensen takes his back. Faber with great handfighting and escapes. Low single by Faber and he cannot finish it. Faber slips and Jorgensen briefly has Faber’s back before Urijah escapes. Jorgensen looks much more confident in this round until Faber lands a huge power double and takes Jorgensen’s back. Could argue that Jorgensen won, but that big takedown and dominant position by Faber evens it up. MMAFrenzy has is 10-10 (30-28).

Rd. 4- Legkick by Jorgensen to start the round. Huge right by Faber but Jorgensen eats it. Faber just misses completing an inside trip. Guillotine attempt by Faber misses off a bad hot by Jorgensen. Solid combo by Faber. Big elbow by Jorgensen in the clinch. Nice takedown by Faber and he takes Jorgensen’s back. Faber takes his back and sinks in the choke for the finish and gets it. Show of class by Faber after the finish.
