As earlier reported, former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez is currently engaged in a legal battle with Bellator. Basically, UFC offered Alvarez a contract, but, according Bellator, it has a contractual right to match UFC’s offer. As long as Bellator’s offer is “comparable,” Bellator has the right to continue on with Alvarez.
Alvarez claims Bellator is tortiously interfering with his prospective contract with UFC and, also, that Bellator has incidentally breached its contract with Alvarez.
Currently the lawsuit is still in its early stages. According to MMAPayout, Bellator is attempting to dismiss the case, and Alvarez is trying to have his day in court.
It doesn’t look like we’ll see Eddie Alvarez any time soon in UFC. Given that fighters typically have a short shelf-life, this is not good for Alvarez.
