MMAFrenzy continues our coverage of UFC on FOX 7 with our recap of tonight’s FX preliminary card. The opening trio of FX fights was headlined by a pivotal flyweight bout that saw Joe Benavidez defeat Darren Uyenoyama in devastating fashion. In other action, Jorge Masvidal and T.J. Dillashaw picked up important wins.

Benavidez Destroys Uyenoyama

Joe Benavidez was in top form tonight against fellow top ten flyweight Darren Uyenoyama. Benavidez completely controlled the fight with a mix of power strikes and smart grappling exchanges. Uyenoyama would desperately try to get the fight to the ground, but Benavidez played it smart and avoided the prolonged ground exchanges while landing vicious punches when the fight did hit the canvas. In the second, Benavidez would land a monster body shot that put Uyenoyama in an extreme amount of pain. The Team Alpha Male fighter quickly swarmed and dropped his opponent with a crisp body shot that lead to the end of the fight. “Joe B” has now won two straight since dropping his flyweight title shot last year in Toronto.

Masvidal Edges Means

Strikeforce import Jorge Masvidal secured a win in his UFC debut but Tim Means did not make it easy. Masvidal would take a clear advantage in the wrestling department, as he stuffed Means’ takedowns while landing several of his own. Means would not relent on the ground however, landing vicious elbows from the ground and mostly stymied Masvidal’s attempts to posture up and knock him out. In the end, Masvidal would pick up the win but Means certainly made interesting with a solid performance of his own.

Dillashaw Floors Viana

T.J. Dillashaw picked up his second victory in just over a month by flooring Hugo Viana in the opening FX bout. The two TUF veterans absolutely went at it in the first round, with the Brazilian stunning Dillashaw early. The Team Alpha Male fighter would recover and take Viana’s back after a slick takedown but Viana would work out. The bout hinged on a beautiful striking attack by Dillashaw, as he floored Viana multiple times before Referee John McCarthy called the fight.
