Sonnen: Silva Not “Even Close” to Jones

If you were expecting, or hoping, Chael Sonnen to change his tune and start trash talking Jon Jones before the two battle at UFC 159, it appears that’s not going to be the case. In fact, not only has Sonnen refrained from the verbal warfare we’re accustomed to seeing, he continues to heap praise on the UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion.

While speaking during the UFC 159 media call to promote Saturday’s fight, Sonnen was asked to compare Jones to his old nemesis Anderson Silva, and then, finally, the Sonnen fans have grown to love–or hate–appeared.

First, Sonnen reminded the MMA world that he holds, not one or two, but three 10-8 rounds over Silva, and that as far as his second loss to the middleweight champ: “He never knocked me down; I fell down. They say Anderson is the best, pound-for-pound, he’s not the best round-for-round.”

So, with with that in mind, Sonnen proceeded to argue that: “If you think Jon and Anderson are even close, I’ll run through Jon because I ran through Anderson, but I don’t think they’re close. I think Jon is considerably better than Anderson.”

Now, one could deduce by this logic that if Sonnen “ran through” Anderson, and still lost two fights to the middleweight king, this guarantees he’ll lose to Jones Saturday right? Or no?

UFC 159 will be hosted by the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
