UFC 159 Play-by-Play

MMAFrenzy’s coverage of UFC 159 continues with our play-by-play of tonight’s pay-per-view main card. Coverage will begin tonight at 10PM with a lightweight scrap between Pat Healy and Jim Miller. Tonight’s PPV will be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen. Be sure to check back and refresh often for the latest from UFC 159.

UFC 159 Play-by-Play

Pat Healy vs. Jim Miller

Rd. 1- Miller with a combo to start the action. Healy is moving his feet like he is looking for a takedown. Brutal legkick by Miller followed by a straight left. Blistering strike by Miller. Big leg kick by Miller again and an elbow in the collar tie. Gorgeous legsweep by Miller. Healy rotates his hips to attempt an arm bar/kimura, but Miller wisely defends. Omaplata attempt by Healy is defended. Miller gets to a backmount crucifix and has a deep armbar attack working. Healy is defending well and works out. Knee in the clinch by Healy as they exit the clinch. Right by Healy as he secures a takedown with 1:15 left. Healy with hard strikes as Miller rolled for a leglock. Miller stands and throw by Healy returns him to the mat but Miller reverses. Healy tries an armbar but Miller defends and lands huge shots as the round ends. Ton of damage to Healy’s eye. MMAFrenzy scores it 10-9 Miller.

Rd. 2- Healy eats a kick to the body as he shoots a takedown. Trip by Healy but Miller immediately works back up. Good elbow on the clinch exit by Healy. Miller seizes control of a clinch against the cage and he lands a big elbow but Healy goes for a takedown and lands it. Deep half guard by Miller but he works back to full guard. GNP by Healy is getting through here. Miller is trying to work up and he’s eating shots here and Healy takes his back. Healy with a RNC attempt but Miller defends. Miller sweeps out of Healy’s mount and is defending a takedown. Miller digs for a Japanese necktie but Healy defends. Round ends with a knee to the groin by Healy. MMAFrenzy scores it 10-9 Healy (19-19).

Rd. 3- Big right by Miller briefly staggers Healy and he nearly has a takedown but gives it up. Huge legkick by Miller. Big strike by Healy and he lands a lowblow but it’s not called. Healy with a takedown now and has a deep half guard now. Healy is dropping strikes now with 2:00 left. Back side mount by Healy now and he now sinks in a hook. Rear-naked choke by Healy and Miller goes unconscious.

Phil Davis vs. Vinny Magalhaés

Rd. 1- Headkick by Vinny is blocked and he is clearly looking to land kicks early. Nice body combo by Davis. Rush by Vinny and the fighters are briefly in the clinch but Davis breaks it. Nice headkick by Davis is partially blocked and Magalhaes is stunned. Davis is pushing the pace with the striking attack and wisely avoiding the clinch. Nice takedown by Vinny but Davis works very well on the ground and escapes. Davis is constantly attacking with 1-2’s to mess with Magalhaes’ timing. Brilliant combos by Davis here. Vinny claims an eye-poke by Miraglotta waves it on. More combos by Davis as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Davis.

Rd. 2- Nice right by Vinny to start the action. Vinny ducks a front kick to the face by Davis. Davis hits a brilliant duck-under and secures a takedown but lets Vinny up. Wicked pair of combos by Davis. Davis has a fantastic stiff jab working tonight. Inside legkick by Vinny. Davis keeps Vinny backing up with these jabs. The former Penn State wrestling star looks very relaxed. Davis catches a kick and takes him down off it. Davis with one punch and lets Vinny back up. Davis is just picking Vinny apart now. Vinny with a takedown attempt but Davis scrambles out and busts up Vinny’s face on the exit. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Davis (20-18).

Rd. 3- Vinny comes out with a sense of urgency in the third but Davis is just too quick for him. Davis with more misdirection and a jab that gets answered by Magalhaes. Vinny’s movement is non-existent so far. Davis attacks with a shot but lets Vinny pull guard and wisely back off. Big punches by Davis against the cage. Ton of feints by Davis so far. Fans are booing but Davis is just dominant. Davis eats a legkick to land a big body shot. More and more rights by Davis as he is in total control. Vinny with a desperate takedown attempt but it is terrible form and Davis just backs away. 1:00 left now and Vinny needs to get crazy here. Davis continues to pick his shots and is just picking Vinny apart. Headkick by Vinny with :10 left but that’s it. MMAFrenzy has the round and the fight for Davis (30-27).

Cheick Kongo vs. Roy Nelson

Rd. 1- Legkick by Kongo to open the action but Nelson immediately looks for takedown and eats a punch on the way in. Kongo with knees in the clinch but Nelson has a body lock here and the referee breaks them up. Huge overhand right by Nelson and Kongo is down and out.

Alan Belcher vs. Michael Bisping

Rd. 1- Herb Dean is our referee tonight. Legkick by Bisping is partially checked. Left highkick by Belcher is checked. Brief stoppage for a groin kick and we’re back. Nice combo by Belcher and his kick is partially caught. Legkick by Bisping and he lands a body kick as well. Bisping is doing a good job of cutting the cage so far. Belcher with some fancy footwork in the cage so far. Nice overhand right by Bisping lands. Big punch by Belcher backs up Bisping. Bisping with a legkick and we have brief stoppage as Belcher catches Bisping with an eye-poke. Belcher slips on a kick and his missing ankle wraps seem to be hurting him here. Big right by by Bisping stuffs a Belcher takedown attempt. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Bisping but it is close.

Rd 2- More movement by each early on but Bisping is starting to find his range with a mix of kicks and punches. Great counter combo by Bisping off a Belcher miss. Bisping with another hard combination off a Belcher miss. Belcher is grimacing each time he throws a kick. Hard rights by both fighters but Bisping with another wicked combo. Nice left by Bisping here too. Bisping stuffs a takedown but eats a hard left and right by Belcher. Another big shot by Belcher but Bisping with a hard combo to end the round. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Bisping (20-18)

Rd. 3- Urgency to start the round by Belcher but Bisping with nice shots to shut him down. Bisping backs him up with another combination that lands. Belcher lookes out-gunned and tired in the third, he’s winding up and Bisping is picking him apart. Hard rights by Bisping. Another combo by Bisping with 90-seconds left. Belcher tries a takedown but he has no drive on it  and Bisping defends easily. Huge combo by Bisping. Oh nasty eye-poke to Belcher’s eye and his surgically repaired eye is literally cut, fight’s over. Technical decision upcoming but it should be 30-27 Bisping.

UFC Light Heavyweight Title Fight: Jon Jones (c) vs. Chael Sonnen

Rd 1- We’re underway and Jones with a nasty knee pick. Sonnen works up but eats some shots on the exit. Jones controls the fight in the clinch. Another easy takedown by Jones and a big elbow by Jones. Another elbow by Jones and Sonnen works up. Sonnen with weak shots in the clinch as Jones works a huge uppercut, to an elbow, to a spinning elbow. Big uppercut to the body by Jones and Jones takes Sonnen down again. Big elbow by Jones as Sonnen tries to work up. Jones is taking his time and landing the big elbows/punches rather than the small ones. Massive elbow by Jones and a huge knee to the body. Big strikes by Jones and Sonnen is a bloody mess as the ref halts the fight. May have been a tad early but Sonnen was getting crushed.
