Although Benson Henderson hasn’t been sending fans into an ecstatic frenzy with highlight reel stoppages during his reign as UFC lightweight champ, one would think that “Smooth” has at least been winning some of his critics over. According to UFC vet Diego Sanchez, however, he’s not one of them.
Sanchez recently appeared on MMA Junkie.com Radio, and when the subject of Henderson’s UFC on FOX 7, split decision win over Gilbert Melendez came up, here’s what “The Dream”– not “Nightmare” remember–had to say.
“After watching Benson Henderson’s performance against Gilbert Melendez, I must say, I wasn’t impressed,” the 31 year-old noted, who’s also coming off a razor thin, split decision win over Takanori Gomi in March . “I see a lot of holes in his game, and I feel like that belt’s there for the taking.”
While Sanchez reportedly went on to add that Henderson is a “great fighter”, he doesn’t see the lightweight getting to his goal of being the winningest champion ever. Sanchez also relayed that when he’s “on”, he believes “nobody” can beat him at 155.
Interesting. How many fans and pundits would pick Sanchez to beat Henderson? Not too many one would think. All the talk about decision wins aside, look who Henderson has beat to date in the UFC. It’s an impressive list to say the least.
Sanchez is set to fight against an opponent to be determined at UFC 164 on August 31st.
