It’s only been a couple days since Chael Sonnen called out Wanderlei Silva on “UFC Tonight”, and not surprisingly, things appear to be moving forward with the light-heavyweight match. Not only are Sonnen and Silva two of the biggest names in the sport, but there’s a wee bit of history between the two stars, which makes the fight that much more compelling.
So, the good news is that according to a report from Mixed Martial Arts.com, veteran writer Dave Meltzer has relayed on his radio show that the UFC is hoping to book the bout on the August 17th UFC card in Boston. That card will also mark the first UFC event on the new FOX Sports 1 network, so both the UFC and FOX want to have plenty of pull for the event, and Sonnen versus Silva certainly fits the bill.
In fact, according to Meltzer, Sonnen calling out Silva could be more about locking up a big name fight for the card than actually having a burning desire to fight “The Axe Murderer.” Meltzer was quoted saying in the aforementioned report:
[Re: Chael on UFC Tonight]…The Wanderlei Silva thing was something he was told to do because they are looking at- I know that the idea is Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen as one of the top matches on the August 17 show in Boston. That’s what they are looking for.
After all, it wasn’t long ago that Sonnen was scoffing at the idea of fighting the former PRIDE champ; how the times have changed. Regardless of why the fight’s in the works, it promises to be a huge one.
