Rory MacDonald has done his best to live up to the hype that surrounded his UFC arrival, as the Tristar welterweight has gone 5-1 in the Octagon to date, and has defeated men like BJ Penn, Nate Diaz and Mike Pyle in the process. That’s not a bad resume for a 23 year-old-fighter. While some observers already view MacDonald as the “next big thing”, his UFC on FOX 8 Jake Ellenberger doesn’t see it, yet.
While speaking to MMA Junkie.com Radio, Ellenberger acknowledged that MacDonald “has a lot of talent”–Penn would likely agree–but also stated:
“I think Rory gets a lot of credit, a lot of publicity, because he trains with, obviously, Georges St-Pierre, the champion – and he gets a lot of praise from Georges. But like I said before, I’m not real sold on him yet. He hasn’t really been tested, if you will. I think Carlos did, and Carlos came out on top.”
The only man to defeat MacDonald to date is of course Condit, who it should be noted, was being handled by his younger opponent quite nicely until mounting the memorable comeback. Since the defeat MacDonald has won four straight bouts.
If that wasn’t enough to stoke the competitive fires of “Ares”, which as the god of war should already be burning pretty intensely, Ellenberger also said he doesn’t see MacDonald as the biggest fight of his career. Interesting stuff, although it could be Ellenberger’s way of messing with MacDonald’s head.
At any rate, the UFC on FOX 8 fight will go down, July 27th in Seattle. This is getting good.
