The narrative surrounding this Saturday’s UFC on FX 8 headliner has been dramatically shaped not only by the skills of Luke Rockhold and Vitor Belfort, but by the fact that the latter utilizes testosterone-replacement-therapy. If Belfort wins, some will point to his use of TRT, rather than his abilities (or pounding left straight) as to why he won the fight. If Rockhold wins, well, then justice will have been served for those who believe TRT is cheating.
UFC commentator and renowned ex-fighter Kenny Florian has come out against the use of TRT, and relayed to MMA Junkie.com Radio recently that “if you’re able to produce the testosterone” then “perhaps you should retire.” How many fighter’s ears were burning after he said that?
The 36 year-old Florian added that TRT is a “huge advantage” for its users, since it improves their ability to recover as they age. At the end of the day, however, Florian believes a fighter’s skill set is what wins fights.
“We have fighters who are on TRT, but it really does come down to the technical level of the fighters. We have two very experienced and dangerous guys going at it with Luke Rockhold and Vitor Belfort. I think that’s a great fight no matter what.”
This take on the fight will probably go over better with TRT detractors if Rockhold emerges victorious, but, it’s hard to argue that Saturday’s main event isn’t compelling for multiple reasons. It will also be interesting to see over the coming year or so how TRT users perform in the Octagon, and what the fan response will be.
