Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza may have fielded questions regarding a possible bout with Vitor Belfort, following his impressive Octagon debut last weekend, but the UFC has plans for the middleweight to fight fellow contender Yushin Okami. Of course, Belfort is likely looking to face the winner of the July 6th bout between champ Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman.
According to a report from MMA Junkie.com, UFC boss man Dana White relayed at a pre-UFC 160 event today that the promotion is hoping to match “Jacare” up against Okami. The fight isn’t signed, however, so no date has been set.
It’s a match-up that makes sense rankings wise, as Okami currently sits at number three, and Souza is ranked sixth. Souza had been scheduled to fight Costa Philippou at UFC on FX 8, but the rising middleweight got cut during training and had to withdraw. That’s another match-up you think they could have looked at as well.
At any rate, if “Jacare”-Okami gets booked, it will be interesting to see what approach the powerful Japanese fighter takes against the jiu-jitsu master. Some fans may not care for Okami’s style of fighting, but there’s no question he’s one of the toughest men to face in the division. After dropping back-to-back bouts to Silva and Tim Boetsch, Okami has rebounded with consecutive wins over Buddy Roberts, Alan Belcher and Hector Lombard. His record in the Octagon to date is 13-4.
