Although it remains unclear as to when Jon Jones will step into the Octagon again, more and more it’s looking like the UFC light-heavyweight champ will take on Alexander Gustafsson when he does. Jones has acknowledged several times that he would like to fight Gustafsson next, and with both men currently in Moscow, Russia, the latter has tweeted:
Its on @JonnyBones cant wait to get in that cage with YOU!!!
Yesterday, Dana White relayed at a UFC 160 media event, that Jones has ligament damage in the foot he injured during his one-sided win over Chael Sonnen last month. While Jones could be ready to fight this fall as the champ had hoped, he may not be able to return until later in the year. As White noted, his recovery could take “six weeks” or “six months”. Jones will likely undergo a MRI when he returns from Russia.
Either way, it would certainly make sense if the UFC is granting Jones’ wish to fight Gustafsson. The 25 year-old star already holds a win over Lyoto Machida, the other top contender, and he is committed to fighting at least one more time at 205 pounds so he can attempt setting a new record for title defenses (six).
It’s also interesting that Gustafsson’s tweet surfaced when both men are in Russia, which is a market White has already said the promotion hopes to host an event in soon.
