Fans looking forward to seeing Douglas Lima and Ben Saunders throw again will have to wait even longer, as Lima is reporting that he’s been injured and that his Bellator 97 bout with the UFC vet is off. The two had been scheduled to fight on July 31st to determine who is the Season 8 welterweight tourney winner. The tilt had already been delayed to begin with, due to the fact that Lima broke his hand during his semifinals tilt with Bryan Baker back in February.
The 25 year-old Lima, who stopped Michail Tsarev and Baker to advance to the finals, tweeted:
Very unlucky with these back to back injuries but the fight is off for July. I’m injured again. Hope to get back training in no time.
According to a report from Sherdog.com, Lima tore cartilage in his ribs while preparing for Saunders. There’s been no word yet as to whether Saunders will still compete on the card.
Lima and Saunders fought for the first time in November, 2011, and Lima KO’d the former TUF competitor in the second round. If you haven’t been following Bellator for very long, then you should know that Lima is kind of a big deal, due to the fact he’s gone 6-1 in the promotion and has already won a tournament. The only man to defeat him since in his last ten fights is Bellator welterweight champ Ben Askren.
Bellator 97 will take place in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and will feature lightweight champ Michael Chandler taking on David Rickels and Askren fighting Andrey Koreshkov.
