British MMA fans should be excited to hear that it looks as though the UFC intends to return to Manchester in the coming months. According to a report from MMA Junkie.com, UFC President Dana White confirmed after Saturday’s UFC 161 card, that the promotion plans to host an event in the historic city sometime this year.
The last time the UFC hosted a card in Manchester was November, 2009, which featured Randy Couture working his way to a unanimous decision win over Brandon Vera in the main event. UFC 105 also featured Dan Hardy defeating Mike Swick by UD, as well as Michael Bisping stopping Denis Kang. The card was hosted by the city’s Manchester Evening News Arena.
If the UFC does indeed hold an event in Manchester this year, 2013 will mark the first time since 2009 that the promotion has held more than one card in the nation. UFC on FUEL TV 7 was hosted by London’s Wembley Arena this past February, and saw interim bantamweight champ Renan Barao submit Michael McDonald in the fourth round.
A key reason the UFC is likely eager to host another event in Britain soon, is because of the recent broadcasting deal it signed with BT Sports, which goes in effect this August.
