Joseph Benavidez “Down to Fight Anybody”

Joseph Benavidez

Joseph Benavidez may be the UFC’s number one flyweight contender, but because he fought champion Demetrious Johnson less than nine months ago, the promotion has an interesting match-making dilema on its hands. Especially since it’s only mid June, and Benavidez has already scored wins over  the #3 ranked Ian McCall and the #9 Darren Uyenoyama this year. Johnson is scheduled to fight the #4 ranked John Moraga on July 27th at UFC on FOX 8.

It sounds like Benavidez, however, is content to sit back and watch things unfold in the flyweight division, before he books his next fight. While speaking to MMA recently, the 28 year-old stated:

“I’m just waiting it out. I got two fights pretty quick at the beginning of the year, so this is a good time for me to get to travel and mix up my training a little bit, which I always like to do,” said Benavidez, who spent some time recently training at the Evolve MMA facility in Singapore.  “I’m down to fight anyone they put in front of me. A lot of people ask me if I want a title fight, but that’s going to come so I’m just getting better until then.”

One of the names that pops out when you look at the flyweight rankings is the #2 ranked Jon Dodson, who hasn’t been signed to another fight, since he lost by UD to Johnson in January. Jussier Formiga is coming off a decision win over Chris Cariaso at UFC on FX 8, but he’s just one fight removed from a stoppage loss versus Dodson last October.

And who does Benavidez have winning the upcoming Johnson-Moraga tilt? While the 18-3 fighter credited Moraga for being a “tough guy”, he added “I think Demetrious will do enough to win. He’s really on top of his game right now.”
