It looks like Jussier “Formiga” da Silva has been given an opportunity to take out the UFC’s #1 flyweight contender, as according to a report from Globo.com, the renowned grappler will fight Joseph Benavidez September 4th. The bout will reportedly be part of the third UFC on FS1 event, which is expected to take place in Brazil; however, the venue has not been determined yet. Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre are apparently the frontrunners. The UFC hasn’t made any official announcement regarding the reported fight.
“Formiga” (15-2) scored a unanimous decision win over Chris Cariaso in his last outing at UFC on FX 8, to rebound from the stoppage loss he incurred versus Jon Dodson last October, which was his Octagon debut. Formiga’s only other loss came against fellow contender Ian McCall.
Benavidez (18-3) has scored wins over McCall and Darren Uyenoyama now, since he lost by split decision to champion Demetrious Johnson last September. The victory over Uyenoyama came via knockout at UFC on FOX 7 in April. The Team Alpha Male fighter is 8-2 in his last 1o bouts, and the only other man to defeat him his current bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz. That’s a pretty impressive run.
A bout between the #5 flyweight and the #1 ranked 125 pounder is not a bad way to start filling out a fight card.
