If 2013 is the going to be the first year a MMA competitor picks up the “Best Fighter” ESPY, it will be either UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones or UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. The renowned fighters are two of the five nominees for the award, as boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr., Canelo Alvarez, and Danny Garcia are the other contenders.
Since the “Best Fighter” award was created in 2007, Mayweather Jr. has taken it four times and Manny Pacquaio twice. Now if it was just handed to who’s the most likely to win any fight period, then maybe previous nominees like Georges St. Pierre and Randy Couture would have taken it. Jones and Silva have already been nominated twice before.
Silva (33-4) only fought twice last year, with one of his stoppage wins coming over light-heavyweight Stephan Bonnar in October, and the other over Chael Sonnen last July.
“Bones” (18-1) scored a decision win over Rashad Evans last April, and then he submitted Vitor Belfort in September, who moved up from middleweight to face the champion. Of course, most recently at UFC 159, Jones also stopped Sonnen. So, it will be interesting to see who fans think had a better campaign, although the period for consideration is supposed to begin in June.
