An intriguing lightweight tilt has been added to the growing UFC 166 fight card as Gilbert Melendez will meet Diego Sanchez in Houston. The bout is almost certain to land on the evening’s pay-per-view main card. UFC officials announced the pairing on Thursday.
The two fighters originally were expected to meet at UFC 164, but the fight was pushed to the later card. Melendez is looking for his first UFC victory when he faces off with Sanchez. Melendez came up short in a razor-thin decision loss to UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson in his Octagon debut at UFC on FOX 7. In his opponent’s last outing, Sanchez came out on the opposite end of a split decision to Takanori Gomi at UFC on FUEL TV 8.
UFC 166 is headlined by the third fight between UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos. While a venue has yet to be officially announced, the billing is expected to take place at the Toyota Center. More bouts are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
