With England’s Michael Bisping set to fight Mark Munoz at the UFC’s next show in Britain on October 26th, another of the nation’s top stars wants a certain match-up booked for the card and it’s a doozy. Former TUF winner and coach Ross Pearson wants to fight former PRIDE champ Takanori Gomi at the event, which is expected to be hosted by the Manchester Arena. Sounds like a pretty solid idea no?
Pearson relayed his wish via Twitter recently, by posting: “Bisping vs Munoz main event at M.E.N i would love Pearson vs Gomi co-main what u think?”
A fan responded to Pearson’s tweet by saying he believes “The Real Deal” needs a “bigger name” (one would assume they were referring to the former PRIDE champ’s current ranking), but the British fighter said “I tried” and that everyone is booked. Another person relayed Pearson should ask to fight Josh Thomson, and the lightweight responded by saying he has inquired about the vet, but that he hasn’t heard back. Thomson was gunning for a bout with Anthony Pettis, and it looked like it might happen, before the latter was tapped to replace the injured TJ Grant at UFC 164.
While Gomi doesn’t reside in the UFC’s top ten rankings, due to his storied career with PRIDE, it’s not surprising to hear Pearson is the latest fighter who wants to fight “The Fireball Kid.” In addition, the 34 year-old Gomi has looked sharp as of late, as he rebounded from losses to Clay Guida and Nate Diaz by defeating Eiji Mitsuoka and Mac Danzig. Although he was handed a split decision defeat versus Diego Sanchez in March, plenty of observers had the Japanese slugger winning the bout.
Gomi-Pearson certainly has the ingredients to make for a memorable scrap.
