Jake Ellenberger captured plenty of headlines heading into UFC on FOX 8 tonight, with the zingers he directed at opponent Rory MacDonald, but Jorge Masvidal also had more than a few ‘observations’ to relay about Michael Chiesa. The two are set to fight on tonight’s preliminary card.
Recently Masvidal said that there is “nothing, nowhere” that impresses him about the former TUF winner, and that Chiesa reminded him of a “watered-down Royce Gracie.” Now, in a more recent interview with MMA Junkie.com, the outspoken Masvidal also said he didn’t like the way Chiesa carried himself after defeating his ATT teammate Anton Kuivanen. The Strikforce vet also took aim at Chiesa’s trademark beard by saying:
“I’m going to tell the commission to wrap that thing up,” Masvidal said. “I don’t want to get no mat herpes or nothing on my face. I’ve been in this game a long time, and I ain’t got nothing on my face. I ain’t about catch some syphilis or whatever he’s got going on in that beard, you know?”
Wow. Who saw that coming? Now despite all the comments, and even having the hygiene of his beard called into question, Chiesa isn’t firing back. The 9-0 lightweight had this to say about Masvida’s pre-fight trashtalk:
“Whatever pumps him up,” Chiesa said. “I’ll let my actions speak for themselves.”
“I’m not a talker. I’m a performer, and I’m going to perform on Saturday night.”
It should be a good tilt, and if you’re wondering, most betting lines have Masvidal at around a -250 to -290 favorite to win the fight
