Although Lyoto Machida has suffered setbacks in his career before, and has responded with jaw dropping KO victories to reassert his presence as a top contender, a loss to Phil Davis this Saturday would be a major blow for “The Dragon.” On the other hand, if Machida blasts through the light-heavyweight at UFC 163, then the 35 year-old will have made a massive statement as to why he should be tapped for another title shot. It’s an intriguing fight for many different reasons.
Of course, due to the wrestling pedigree of Davis and the unorthodox striking skills of Machida, most observers believe “Mr. Wonderful” will be in for a long (or short) night if he can’t get the former champ to the ground. On the latest edition of “UFC Tonight”, however, Chael Sonnen reminded folks that’s easier said than done.
“He doesn’t have to submit him, but he has to get him to the ground. The way to beat him is you have to wrestle him. However, Machida is the wrestler killer. He gets guys to fight him where he wants to fight, within arm’s reach from him. Nobody gets too tight, and if they get too tight, see what happened to Ryan Bader. He knocked him out.”
Now despite Sonnen’s praise for Machida, “The American Gangster” is actually going with Davis for the fight, but noted it’s going to be an “uphill battle” for the wrestler. Sonnen’s commentating teammate, however, Mr. Kenny Florian, is going with Machida.
UFC 163 will be hosted by Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena and will feature featherweight champ Jose Aldo taking on Chang Sung Jung in the main event.
