Now that Tim Kennedy is out of the picture, and Chael Sonnen has presented Vitor Belfort a counter offer he’s unlikely to accept, Dana White has reportedly approached “The Phenom” about fighting Rashad Evans. After all, if Belfort isn’t interested in fighting someone at 185 unless they’re the middleweight champ, “Sugar” fits the bill right?
White was in attendance at the latest UFC on World Tour event in New York, and when asked about the ongoing drama as to who Belfort will fight, the UFC President stated (quote via MMA Weekly.com):
“Vitor doesn’t want (the Kennedy) fight. So I said, okay, let’s do him and Rashad (Evans) then (at light heavyweight). He wants to fight at a heavier weight, let’s do him and Rashad. I haven’t heard back on that yet.”
And what about Belfort’s reported wish to fight Sonnen? White noted that “Chael hasn’t even fought yet,” and that further, he’s set to fight “Shogun” Rua on August 17th. In addition, since Belfort isn’t willing to risk his title shot at 185, and Sonnen wants it to be for the #1 contender spot, it seems dead in the water.
Evans could certainly pose Belfort some problems, and it’s a big name fight that the UFC could probably sell. The one massive fly in the ointment here, however, is that the two are both part of the Blackzilians. Chances are the search for Belfort’s next opponent is going to continue.
