With Lyoto Machida dropping a unanimous decision to Phil Davis last night at UFC 163 the promotion found itself looking for the fighter next in line to face the winner of the UFC 165 main event. UFC executive Marshall Zelaznik told the press that Brazilian Glover Teixeira would be next in line for the title shot provided he secures a “strong victory” over Ryan Bader next month at UFC Fight Night 28.
Said Zelaznik at the UFC 163 post fight press conference:
“Dana and Joe have confirmed, with a strong victory by Glover, that he probably gets the winner of the Jon Jones fight.”
Teixeira has been dominant since making his debut at last year’s UFC 146. The Brazilian, who has not lost since a 2005 bout with Ed Herman, will face his toughest test to date when he takes on Bader. The two were originally supposed to meet at UFC 160 before an injury sidelined Bader. Teixeira and Bader are now set to headline UFC Fight Night 28 on September 4.
