Coach Says “Jacare” “Bad Match-Up” for Okami

Yushin Okami

One of the big questions that will be answered at the September 4th, UFC Fight Night 28 card will be whether Glover Teixeira can lock up a title shot, by scoring an impressive win over light-heavyweight Ryan Bader. While that bout has a lot of hype behind it, because of Teixeira’s title shot implications, there are also intriguing questions regarding the scheduled middleweight tilt between “Jacare” Souza and Yushin Okami.

Souza arrived in the UFC earlier this year billed as a top contender, and the former Strikeforce champ delivered an impressive, choke out victory over Chris Camozzi at UFC on FX 8. Since the jiu-jitsu star has only lost once in nearly five years (to Luke Rockhold via decision), “Jacare” could be knocking on the door for a title shot sometime next year.

That said of course, he’s taking on a man in Yushin Okami, who has gone 13-4 to date in the UFC and has been one of the promotion’s top contenders for ages. Sure, the judoka takes fire from critics for his grinding approach, but that doesn’t change the fact he’s an extremely tough guy to beat.

So, with that in mind, is Souza’s coach Josuel Distak concerned about what awaits his fighter in September? Apparenetly not. While speaking to MMA recently, here’s what Distak had to say about the fight.

“Jacare is ready,” Distak said. “It’s going to be an important fight because they are both top-five fighters, and we’re focused. It’s a bad match-up for Okami in every aspect of the fight. I don’t see how he could win. The thing is, we will get to Okami’s weakness and explore that. I believe his weakness is the stand-up game, so we will go for the knockout.”

Guess we’ll find out soon enough if there’s an possible way Okami can win. UFC Fight Night 28 will go down in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and will be broadcast on FOX Sports 2.
