MMAFrenzy’s live fight coverage of UFC Fight Night 26 concludes with our recap tonight’s main event between Chael Sonnen and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. While many believed Sonnen could pick up the victory, few saw it coming via a first round submission victory in front of the Boston, Massachusetts crowd.
Sonnen Submits Shogun
UFC light heavyweight/middleweight Chael Sonnen picked up an impressive victory over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in tonight’s UFC Fight Night 26 main event. Sonnen would use his trademark wrestling and ground-and-pound over the course of the first round but in the end it was his underrated submission attack that won him the night. The end came as Rua attempted to work off his back as Sonnen quickly jumped to an arm-in guillotine. Rua would fight for survival but was unable to work free.
The victory snaps a two-fight losing streak for Chael Sonnen, and drops Shogun to 2-4 in his last six. After the Sonnen was announced the winner he dedicated his fight to his grandmother and a personal friend battling cancer before launching into pro-wrestling style promo to call out Wanderlei Silva three months from now at UFC 168.
Rd. 1- Herb Dean is the referee tonight. Sonnen immediately lands a double and Rua works back up. Rua with a takedown on Chael now. Rua is tying him up but Chael jumps a guillotine and Rua has to back out to escape. Nice Greco-Roman by Chael in the clinch and he is working in half guard. Rua tries to work up but Chael keeps landing those short shots that have become calling card. Rua uses butterflies to tie up Sonnen but Sonnen breaks his grip and lands a solid body shot. Rua goes for an up kick and Chael uses it to pass. Rua is trying tie up Chael in order to sweep/escape but Chael’s base is just too strong. Chael jumps an arm-in guillotine and pulls guard. Rua desperately tries to fight out but he is forced to tap.
