MMAFrenzy’s coverage of UFC Fight Night 27 rolls along with our recap of tonight’s FOX Sports 2 preliminary card. The four-fight billing was topped off by a battle between TUF 17’s Dylan Andrews and Papy Abedi that saw the New Zealander victorious via TKO. In other action, Brandon Thatch, Darren Elkins, and Jason High all picked up crucial victories tonight in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Andrews Comes From Behind to Stop Abedi
TUF 17’s Dylan Andrews rallied from an early should injury to get the victory over Papy Abedi in tonight’s feature fight. After a lackluster second round, Andrews decided to leave it all in the cage in the third round. Andrews landed a sneaky uppercut that caused Abedi to practically short-circuit. Andrews quickly pounced to get his second straight UFC victory since TUF 17.
Thatch Annihilates Edwards in UFC Debut
Former Resurrection Fighting Alliance standout Brandon Thatch came to the Octagon with a lot of hype and he did not disappoint when he faced Justin Edwards tonight in Indy. “Ruckus” used his trademark striking assault to rock Edwards early and from there it was all but over as the Colorado-native poured on the strikes before the referee mercifully stepped in.
Thatch has now won nine fights in a row and looks to be a solid addition to the UFC’s stable of welterweights. That newcomer was not beyond a bit of self-depreciating humor and said he “peed a little” when UFC ring announcer Bruce Buffer called his name out. The talented striker will be one to watch grow in the Octagon.
Elkins Edges Hioki
Darren Elkins bounced back from his first loss at featherweight with an impressive victory over Hatsu Hioki tonight in his home state of Indiana. While Hioki hurt Elkins in the first with a wicked volley of teep kicks, he was unable to get the finish and that proved fatal for the Japanese fighter. Elkins would use an active ground attack to take the second and third rounds and that was enough to get the come back victory. Hioki dropped his third fight in a row tonight, and that could see him leave the Octagon with a 2-3 record.
High Secures First UFC Victory Against Head
It took three tries but Jason High finally secured his first ever UFC victory tonight in Indianapolis. High quickly took opponent James Head down with a powerful double. While Head scrambled to the cage High would land a nasty left hand that stopped his standup and the “Kansas City Bandit” quickly pounced and jumped on a deep guillotine choke. Head would valiantly try to defend the choke, but High would not relent and secured his first ever UFC victory.
