A day after UFC President Dana White acknowledged that a light-heavyweight scrap between Chael Sonnen and Phil Davis might be possible, “The American Gangster” turned to Twitter late Thursday to challenge Rashad Evans. Sonnen was hoping to fight Wanderlei Silva before the year is out, and although the latter accepted the challenge publicly, White said recently that the Brazilian is “not healthy” and cannot fight until 2014.
So, Sonnen has now asked Evans if he’s interested in fighting at UFC 167, which will mark the promotion’s 20th anniversary. Sonnen asked the former light-heavyweight champ via Twitter “Hey Rashad, let me ask you a question… You busy Nov 16th?” To which Evans responded “Nah not really!! What’s up?”
Sonnen proceeded to tweet a mock-up, UFC 167 poster which featured Sonnen and Evans on it. Then “Suga” followed with “that looks like a good idea to me! I knew you had something you really wanted to say to me yesterday on the show!”
Now, as of Friday AM, neither the UFC or White have commented on Sonnen’s challenge, which is certainly an interesting one. Evans is coming off a split decision win over Sonnen’s former training partner Dan Henderson in June, and has been one of the promotion’s top 205érs for years. If they fight, and if Sonnen wins, he will have defeated two former champs in a row. As any dedicated fan knows, Sonnen’s coming off a submission victory over “Shogun” Rua at UFC Fight Night 26 on August 17th.
It will be interesting to see what happens from here. Although Sonnen-Evans doesn’t have the same back story as Sonnen-Wand, it would certainly be a nice addition to the UFC 167 card.
