Hardcore fans and MMA pundits have speculated for years that “Jacare” Souza could be a force in the UFC’s middleweight division, and now that the former Strikforce champ has defeated Yushin Okami, the jiu-jitsu star is in the title shot mix. Of course, not only did Souza defeat one of the promotion’s longest running contenders last night at UFC FN 28, but he did so in devastating fashion.
Now that Souza has a win over Okami, who was ranked #3 prior to last night, who could be next for the Brazilian? While discussing his future after last night’s card, Souza made it clear he’s interested in fighting any middleweight, or light-heavyweight for that matter, except one former champion (comments via MMA Junkie.com).
“Anderson is someone I don’t want to fight,” Souza said. “He’s someone who’s in my camp; he’s my friend. He helps me, and I help him. So I wouldn’t be a good character if I said I wanted to fight him.
“But, I’m a UFC fighter, and I hope the UFC never gives us this fight, but I’m ready to face anyone in the world in my weight class, and also at 205.”
Now of course, there’s a lot going on in the coming months before anyone should seriously start thinking about the possibility of Souza fighting Silva. “The Spider” is set to rematch champion Chris Weidman at UFC 168, and the #2 contender in Vitor Belfort is set to fight Dan Henderson on November 9th. Chances are the UFC will look to match “Jacare” up against another top contender beforehand any ways, like say the winner of Mark Bisping and Mark Munoz?
If Silva retakes the belt, however, does this mean Souza might move up to 205?
