Royce Gracie recently relayed that he hasn’t been overly impressed with many of the next generation Gracie fighters, but the legend clearly thinks very highly of Kyra Gracie’s MMA prospects, if she indeed transitions into fighting.
Kyra Gracie is one of the world’s top jiu-jitsu competitors, whose resume includes multiple world and ADCC championships. The 28 year-old, who is a second degree, BJJ Black Belt, has said she plans to move into MMA, but no firm timeline has been set as of yet.
While speaking to MMA Fighting.com recently, Royce Gracie heaped praise on Kyra, after relaying he isn’t a “big fan” of women fighting but that it’s a “free world.” While discussing whether he could see Kyra defeating UFC women’s champ Ronda Rousey at some point, Roye offered this:
“Kyra has talent, is tough, she only needs the discipline to train (MMA),” Gracie stated. “It’s always a pleasure to watch a Gracie winning. We were born fighting. She has the whole package.”
“She has more submissions, is more used to competition,” he said. “(Ronda Rousey) is good, she knows what she’s doing. (But) Kyra’s jiu-jitsu is better, with a gi or in MMA.”
Wow. While lots of people might agree that Kyra is a better grappler than Rousey, it would be interesting to see if she could get the decorated Judoka to the ground in the first place (you also have to wonder if Gracie is in fact more “used to competition” than Rousey, who has probably competed in a bazillion Judo matches).
Of course, talk of Rousey-Gracie is extremely premature at this juncture, but it will fascinating to see how Kyra looks if and when she starts fighting professionally.
